Story Trove

Welcome to the Story Trove. On this page you’ll find weekly story prompts, along with my own micro-fiction responses. The Trove is a place to share stories, so if something sparks your imagination jump in on the comments.

You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank one.

Pretty Poisons

My writing room is a lovely airy space. It’s also north facing, which is great, except it gets essentially no direct sunlight. Which is why I’m sitting here at 11am shivering in the dark. Okay, that’s entirely self-inflicted: my lights…

Sanctuary

Apparently I took this photo last year in February at Glenfinnan. I remember wondering about the bell in its own little house out on the grounds. As these things often work out with me, I never got around to looking…

Flamelily

An entirely non-earthshattering image for this #StoryPromptOfTheWeek, simply because it’s sunny outside and I happy to have a photo of a very summery flower from my garden. This year’s crop are not quite out yet but it certainly doesn’t feel…

Broken Circle

Today’s story prompt features the Council Island at Finlaggan on Islay. Finlaggan is a small island in loch Finlaggan (unsurprisingly). The site was once a seat of power of the Lord of the Isles, though it’s now in ruins. Before…

Trapped

Today’s #StoryPromptOfTheWeek image I think was taken while at the Scottish Wild Foods Festival some years ago. For some reason my previous post from that event is recorded as being in 2016, which I know isn’t true. Anyway, while on…

Guardian of the woods

This week’s #StoryPromptOfTheWeek was taken way back in 2016 at Cragside. At least, I think that’s where I took it. It was a while ago. I don’t think this statue (which on reflection may have been made of a very…

Half-power

Today’s #StoryPromptOfTheWeek photo was taken back in 2021. We were relaxing in the evening at one of my favourite campsites. The moon rose, perfectly framed by a notch in the branches of a tree. Needless to say, the only camera…

Sneak

This week’s image brings us back to the wolf pack of the Highland Wildlife Park and was taken… well in the past. It’s been shamefully long since I last visited, so I’m looking forward to seeing what’s changed. Clearly, something…

Hive

I took this week’s photo while I was on Bute a while back. At least, I think so. It was earlier this year at some point. To be honest, this year has been… interesting. Plenty of ups to balance out…

The Orb

Hot off the presses this week. On Sunday we unexpectedly came by some tickets for the Enchanted Forest, a light and sound show in Faskally Wood near Pitlochry. Some friends had to cancel at the last minute (like we had…

The Story Trove

Every week I will post a story challenge – a picture or sentence (both if you’re lucky) to kickstart a story. Each one will include my own micro-fiction (50-100 words) attempt to answer the challenge.

Please feel free to post your own versions in the comments. After all, the true magic of stories is in the sharing.

Rules:

  1. Keep it short: This is supposed to be micro-fiction. Half the art of story-telling is staying on point.
  2. Anything goes: Don’t be limited by my own version. Feel free to riff on it if you like, but going your own way could be even better. Go wild. Your imagination is the limit.
  3. Keep it clean: I’m a children’s author, so I hope that children read and enjoy these pages. So let’s all keep it kid-friendly.
